My 94mercedes benz will start but shut off.i can keep it running by staying on gas.if i take off in my car it won't ketch right then i have to keep pumping gas. Then when it finally get gas i can drive normally

This happens every time I start my car.To keep it running I have to give gas to keep it running. I smell gas when I'm going thru this process.

What makes this problem better or worse?

When its cold It takes longer to get started
