Brakes smoke sometimes but work

What is your question?

The other day my brakes started smoking and the peddle went all the way to the floor. After turning the car off and sitting for a few minutes the brakes seemed fine and there was no more smoking. This happened once before a few months ago. What could be going on?

If the brakes are smoking the are either over heating or there is a fluid leak at the caliper. If the smoke smell similar to an electrical fire, then the pads are sticking/dragging and over heating. If the smell is odd and white smoke is visible, most likely the caliper is leaking.
