Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! If your speedometer is barely moving but everything else on the dash is working fine, your 2003 Mazda Tribute is likely dealing with a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) issue or a problem in the wiring between the sensor and the instrument cluster. The VSS is what tells the computer—and your speedometer—how fast you're going. If it's failing or sending a weak signal, the needle might twitch or barely move. It could also be a loose or corroded connector, or even a failing instrument cluster, though that’s less common if everything else is working. You can have a shop scan the system for live speed data—if the computer sees the correct speed but the gauge doesn’t, the cluster’s the issue. If the computer doesn’t see speed either, it’s the sensor or wiring.
