Continued TPS Details, issue found, somewhat.

What is your question?

We found that the Protege threw a code only when the car was put into gear. My mechanic installed an addtional ground on the center wire of the connecter which solved the previous problem. I had checked for ground at this wire and found it have continuity but that was with the engine static. Seems the problem would occur when the car was put in gear and the pedal pushed some. Perhaps the torque movement from the motor caused the problem. Getting the car back tomorrow. Any input would be helpful and quite frankley, educating at this point. Thanks for all the previous insight, it does help. Chris

If you measure voltage at the ground wire with the ignition ON, any more than about 0.1 volt is a faulty ground. If you measure resistance with the connector unplugged and the key OFF, any more than about 0.1 ohm is a faulty ground. You're right, the 'wiggle test' is good to try for intermittent electrical problems. It wouldn't be a bad idea to trace the ground circuit to the ground point to see if there's a broken wire, corrosion or some other potential problem. Also, keep your mechanic on the payroll..

I had done the test you suggest and the numbers were higher. My Mech cut the ground wire at the tps connector and ran a new ground so the faulty circuit basically still exists. So in theory, I could still trace out the circuit and see (or try to see) where the fault is. As to measuring "voltage at the ground" by rights there shouldn't be any, correct. If there is some that would mean a short from a powered wire to the ground. I (sad to say) don't really have a handle on resistance, have to bone up on some bookwork to get a grip on that. I believe my meter read .4 ohms when I tested the cirucit but I will verify. Hope you guys don't mind all the communication but I'm trying to "learn" from all this and the support helps very very much. Thank you gentlemen. Chris PS. we got the car back and runs great. A pleasure to go down the road.

I have seen the Protege tear up the engine wiring harness and this is often caused by worn out motor mounts. The fact that the problem is more pronounced when you put the car in gear i.e reverse confirms that for me.

I will take alook at the mounts to see if this is a concern. Thanks for all the help. Again... Chris
