auto trans shifting hard into 2nd gear overdrive light is blinking but overdrive working fine

Sounds like your transmission is in 'fail-safe'mode. The line pressure is therefore high causing hard upshifts and the O/D light will be blinking to show that there's a transmisson fault detected by the control unit. You can get it checked out by a mechanic with a scanner to determine what the controller is trying to tell you. Go to a transmission shop or a Mazda specialist.
