not shifting

What is your question?

My mazda will now no longer shift up past 2nd gear. It just revs really high, but shifts great in 1st and 2nd and back. A mechanic said they would need to replace the transmission for 2k or more... could it be anything else?

It could be something else, but a diagnosis would need to be performed. I would recommend taking it to another shop for a second opinion if you don't trust the diagnosis performed by this shop.

I am a bit ;ate with this but my 01 MPV had the exact same problem and it ended up needing an entirely new transmission, mine went out in the middle of the road and just shut off completely after about a week of the not shifting ( I drove only in the city for a little while trying to figure out if it could be something else)
