3 weeks ago my driver side headlight went out on my 2007 Mazda CX-7, so I was using my high beams, was told by a mechanic friend that I needed to replace the entire headlight assembly, not just the bulb (for around $300), now yesterday, the passenger side headlight went out as well, could it just be fuses? how do I change just the light bulbs if at all possible?

I've never changed one but seems to me that if you may have to pull back the inner fender liner to access the bulb. I think that car uses two bulbs for high and low, not just one bulb with two filaments. Now here's a bit of unconventional wisdom for you: I've found that when you burn out two headlight or brakelight bulbs at the same time or in quick succession, the cause can be a bad battery connection causing spikes in system voltage as the alternator cuts in in and out. Without a good battery connection, the battery cannot absorb the spike and the momentary high voltage can burn out bulbs or other components. Check your battery terminal connections for tightness and that the contact surfaces are clean and bright for a good connection. Good luck getting those bulbs replaced..
If the battery cables are not the problem, check the headlight fuse? You definitely do not have to replace the entire lens!! I recently had to have a bulb replaced in my 2007 Mazda CX7 and it cost me only $72.00 to have an independent mechanic do the job. Good luck!
