When i turn the switch to 4x4hi or low i ear a sound but it wont work .

maybe the motor which enables and disables the 4x4 is broken
i think the 4wd operates on vacuum and does not work properly i replaced mine with a1998 ford explorer front shafts i got at a bone yard. for a couple hundred bucks, i am glad i did it i have used 4wd many times with great success hope it works its a lot of work but worth it Tina
the problem you are having i had the same problem it was my 4x4 motor mounted on the transfer case
