What is your question?
i have a lifter noise usually when cold, that can be eliminated by stopping the motor and the starting the motor again, sometimes taking 3 attempts. this noise also develops on long trips after about an hour of highway driving, happening intermitintly. the motor has done just on 200 000 kms. i have a friend with a ford courier with the same motor and same simptoms, and i'm thinking this may be a common problem. what might the problem be and the best way to remedy it. ps. i'm from australia post code 4035

In the US Mazda use a 2.6, 4cylinder engine I assume it is the same engine family of engine used in Australia. This engine uses hydraulic lifters that may "bleed down" and take a while to "pump up" on first start to eliminate the clattering noise you hear. Ensure you have the correct weight of oil in the engine as a thicker oil may take longer to pump up to the lifters. There is a product called Risoline that I find to be great. It is an oil additive that has low viscosity and high detergency that cleans out the hydraulic lifters (I used it on my own Mazda Miata/MX5, VW's and Isuzus to quieten down lifter noise). Mazda have a Service bulletin here in the US about improved lifters.
I have one lifter that taps on occasion when starting cold, but it usually only lasts a minute or two and goes away. When having the head gasket replaced I had mechanic take a look and he said the same as the first respondent here - the lifter bleeds down and takes a moment to pump back up. He said no worries and I haven't. Vehicle has 230K miles and no problems otherwise (this was 150K miles ago).
