Speedometer still works but odometer is not what is the problem

odometer + trip counter are controlled by small nylon worm gear that mates them to speedo and trip counter reset button. It becomes dry/fragile/cracks over years, worm gear is available online for $20+- It's located on small gearbox behind speedo, pull cluster through front of dash to reach, disco battery first.
