95 mazda 5 speed what causes brakes and transmission issues at the same time

My truck is 95 mazda 2300 and it was doing great and all the sudden my brakes stopped working as I was backing out of my daughter's house today so I was trying to throw it in 1st cause it's a 5 speed to try to stop it and it would not shift at all into no other gear the only problem I'd had with it lately was a miss in the engine and I just put all new brakes around it so can you tell me your opinion of what could be happening with it
