To answer your question directly, the sensors do not "reboot themselves". What is happening is that the systems on board your vehicle are not "proving out". Meaning, the circumstances you are driving in are not sufficient to pass certain "tests" on board the engine's computer. In turn, the smog test won't pass, because the California smog test relies on the on-board test to verify systems are working properly. There is a drive cycle that needs to be completed, and a lot of it rests upon being able to drive the vehicle for a sustained 55 mph for maybe 15 minutes straight. Then decelerating and accelerating to follow certain criteria. At my repair facility, I have a certain "routine" I follow that is too hard to describe, but I am 100% successful every time getting monitors to set. Meaning - it can be done every time, but takes perseverance and attention to what the vehicle needs. RepairPal.com has a page devoted to setting monitors and performing a drive cycle - check this article out! And good luck! http://repairpal.com/how-to-perform-a-basic-drive-cycle
