Does anyone know how to remove and replace the automatic shift knob for a 1999 Mazda 626 LX? the shift lock button came loose from the shifter thus making it hard to shift from park. i am going to buy an original mazda shifter. i don't like aftermarket (the car has an o/d button). if not, do you know where i can take it for the shift knob to be replaced and how much would it cost? Not every mechanic knows.

To remove the shifter: SELECTOR LEVER AND CABLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the steering column cover. (Refer to 06-12 STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 3. Remove the side panel. (Refer to 09-17 SIDE PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 4. Remove the lower panel. (Refer to 09-17 LOWER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 5. Remove the front console. (Refer to 09-17 FRONT CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 6. Remove the heater unit. (Refer to 07-11 HEATER UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 7. Remove the SAS control module bracket. (Refer to 08-10 SAS CONTROL MODULE BRACKET REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) 8. Remove the shifter and bezel assembly 9. Disconnect bezel lamp wire connector 10. Unscrew shifter knob - 2 screws at knob 11. Release the handle and shaft, release the bezel At this point, you are probably past where you would replace the shifter. But there is some info, straight from the shop manual. Good luck.
