shifting gears becomes gradually harder after a driving the car.

I don't hear anything or no warning lights appear on the dash. when the car stationary say at night in the morning gears are soft until driven for a few miles they become sticky and very hard to change and rather impossible to find the positioning of different gears and to gear down becomes rather impossible. Please advise reasons for gear stiffness occurring after driving a few miles. thank you.
