What is your question?
I am considering on letting a local mechanic fix my Lincoln mkz steering rack, but he is saying it needs to be programmed and it might be only a dealer rack that can be programmed. If that is the case and all these auto parts stores know this is true, why are there so many remanufactured steering racks being sold online? It makes me skeptical of this process. I need a more clear answer whether a local mechanic can program a remanufactured steering rack without Lincoln or Ford's interference. The power steering stopped and a bunch of notifications popped up including; hill stop assist, advancetrac, and safety steering. I had a mechanic read the codes and determine whether it is the steering rack and it is. I only have 107k miles on the car, seems weird for such an expensive part to go like that, especially it being maintained. It kind of annoys me and makes me never want to buy a Lincoln or ford.

Hey, my name is Dusty, and I'm one of the auto experts with RepairPal's Car Genius team. I'm here to help! Concerns about the steering rack and programming requirements for a Lincoln MKZ are valid. A non-dealer mechanic can program a remanufactured steering rack with the right equipment and software. But there are vital points to consider: While opting for a refurbished steering rack might be cost-effective, ensure the replacement part has a robust warranty. There's no real way to predict failure regarding electrical components; they can last years without issue. The steering rack is a vital component of the electronically controlled power steering system in any modern vehicle, and they more likely than not all have some demand for programming and calibration. This process demands specialized diagnostic tools and software, underscoring the importance of selecting a workshop with the appropriate capabilities. Addressing diagnostic requirements is critical for the proper functioning of the steering and stability control systems, thus ensuring the vehicle's safe operation. While an independent shop or technician may have the ability to program a remanufactured steering rack for your Lincoln MKZ, it depends on their equipment and expertise. Proper handling and programming are crucial to prevent complications and restore your vehicle's steering system.
