What is your question?
THE FIRST TIME THE ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE WARNING APPERARED WAS AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE ON AND ALLOWING IT TO WARM UP BEFORE GOING TO WORK. THE NEXT FEW TIMES IT CAME ON WAS AT A STOP LIGHT AND WHILE CLIMBING UP A HILL. ON 6/15/10 THE WARNING CAME ON AGAIN JUST AFTER START UP; I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF RESTART AND ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE NOT SHOWN. FEW MIMUTES LATE AT FIRST STOP, WARNING CAME ON AGAIN ALONG WITH THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT. I LOVE MY LINCOLN AND SPEND AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT CARING FOR IT. IS THIS PROBLEM GOING TO BANKRUPT ME? THAMK YOU SCIENCE MAJOR

Your car has on board diagnostics. Plugging a scan tool into a 16 pin socket under the dash will allow codes to be retrieved form your car's computer that will point in the direction of what is wrong. A failure in either the transmission or engine or a sensor shared by both can put either or both in a fail safe mode.
You need a computer to diagnois a computer... a Plague of Experts!
