Thermostat housing is the problem and water has to be added quite often. So is this a hard or expensive thing to fix? Would it be worth buying a car like this?

The thermostat and housing run roughly $190-$240 for parts through napa and $100-$150 on labor (really depends on what the average labor rate is for your area) and is a fairly simple repair. If your confident that this is the only issue, then yes. Though with adding water to the cooling system you may want to consider a coolant flush as well after the repair
