Can my rear shocks/struts, etc., be modified to give a "softer" ride /

What is your question?

The rear air suspension on my 1997 Lincoln Continental recently went "kaplooey". My "mechanic" replaced it with standard type shocks. etc., but the ride is much bumpier than before. Can the shocks be modified, etc, to give a more "plush" ride ?
