A costly repair to replace the gear shift and its 'box' when it locks in Park when trying to shift, then breaks off in my hand when 'wiggled'. Anyone else have this problem with their Aviator??

Yes! It happen to me when I was getting my oil change and also in front of my house but I figure it out. It is a wire thats is behind the brake pedle that comes loose and when I mess with it the shifter would unlock.
yes, it has happened to me too in April 2011, now i am trying to replace it.
