If the temperature gauge is not reading anything but you have an engine that is overheating, often times it could be indicative of a thermostat that is sticking closed. That said, a full diagnostic test of the cooling system should be performed, to include checking for proper system coolant flow, any radiator restrictions, air pockets, cooling fan operations, and combustion chamber checks for potential internal engine coolant leaks.
