Do catalytic converters go bad?

What is your question?

My car has 200k plus miles on it. Is it possible that the catalytic converter just went bad? Dealer could not tell me why and I have not yet decided whether to replace it. Estimate from dealer was $1500+ (Charleston, WV area).

200k on your vehicle will be about the limit for your CAT. I find that these vehicles work their CATS very hard.

I have the same suv with 95k miles and boths precats are noisy ,was diagnosed as cracked inside the heat shield. $ 1.1k aftermarket repair; $ 1.5k not bad for a dealer oem install. The car is fantastic, I will repair it anyways .
