car jerks when shifting into drive or into reverse

I have a rwd car that jerks or moves really hard when shifting into drive or reverse. A mechanic inspected it from under and said that the propeller shaft has too much play and is the cause. I recently changed transmission fluid and filter. Can this be true? can a drive shaft cause this violent jerk?
