What is your question?
I have 155600 miles - has been an awesome vehicle to date. A nationally chained repair shop recommends: (1) valve cover gaskets leaking needs replaced at $527. (2)transmission pan gasket leaking needs replaced $327. However, the independent Toyota/Lexus shop recommends (1) trans flush $130 (2) T-belt sticker $249 (3) spark plugs $186 (4) water leak and timing belt $610 (5) power steering line leak $655. Why does the national repair shop not bring up the water pump leak? Why does the Lexus shop only mention trans flush where the national shop say trans pan gasket leak replacement? Help!

1. The leaking transmission pan gasket is a clue that the transmission fluid hasn't been serviced for some time. A transmission service is important to keep your transmission from failing. However, frankly $130 for a 06 Lexus transmission service sounds low. If you allow them to do it, make sure they are using the manufacturer-specified fluid only. This is very important. 2. Independent shops tend to hire more qualified help and be more thorough. That said, it's not possible for me to comment on the other recommendations without seeing the vehicle. The timing belt has a service interval specified by the manufacturer. If the belt breaks, the vehicle stops - no matter how fast you're going. In a Lexus it won't necessarily damage the engine if it breaks - in many other vehicles it will bend the valves.
Hello, Your experience may be the result one of two technicians with differing levels of experience in some cases, but others it seems that someone may not have explained everything well. Let's look over these issues together. 1. Timing belt and water pump were recommended by the indi Toyota/Lexus shop, but not the other. The first shop should have checked your maintenance intervals, but may not have, or they did not know the vehicles history. The water pump is changes at the same time as the timing belt to prevent leaking or failure. When was the timing belt changed last? 2. The trans pan gasket and trans flush could be the same item. You would need to ask the indi shop if the trans flush is actually a filter and fluid replacement. If it is, the gasket is replaced in the process. It is strange that the indi shop (who seems to be truly inspecting the vehicle) did not mention the valve cover gasket. Valve cover seepage does not necessitate changing the gasket, but valve cover leakage does. If there is not enough oil leaking out of the valve cover gasket to form a droplet, it is fine. In this situation, I would recommend taking it to one of our certified facilities. They will certainly give you an honest prognosis for your vehicle, and have well-trained technicians to make sure you are taken care.
