What is your question?
My Lexus has 60,000 miles. It started making a whirring sound under the hood near the alternato but No trouble lights were on and all belts and equipment appeared to be moving normally. I took it to Lexus this AM and once I shut down the engine the battery was too weak to turn the engine over. They checked it out and said it needed New Alternator and total costs for labor and parts is $600. Does that sound like a reasonable Price and an accurate Diagnosis?..Thank You very Much. John

Granted its 18 months later but the Lexus dealer here in Fremont CA just quoted $740 to replace the alternator on my wife's 2005 ES330. I see the alternator (DENSO) can be bought on line brand new for $145 so can't see how labor can add another $600? Other advise is dead on - always seek out a good private repair shop that specializes in Japanese cars like Lexus.
Diagnosis is probably correct. Lexus list price on the alternator is $344 and it's 1/2 labor, plus diag time. Just cannot believe you're at the dealer! You need to find a good Jap specialty repair shop with a good local reputation. Usual savings are 20-25% of dealer. Make sure that the replacement alternator is DENSO brand; everything alse is just a "rebuild."
