What would cause the car to loose all electrical power while driving?

Total failure of electrical system. Initially instrument panel lights and possibly all electrical function failed (no headlights or interior electrical functions) for a second while driving but was restored. Now there is no electrical power to vehicle at all (as if battery is not connected).
