malfunction indicator lamp came on, car will not start. what can cause this condition?

2013 Lexus CT200H. Cannot jump start car. Still has original 12-volt battery. Checked the IGN, OBD, 3 ECU fuses -- all good. Cannot obtain any OBD codes because there's no power.

What makes this problem better or worse?

cannot power on car with 12-v Prius battery connected to jump start terminal inside engine compartment fuse box (with + battery) and - battery to ground.r
