Quick and easy: Never. In 25 years, I haven't found a windshield crack caused by a defect yet. My suggestion would be to take a pen to the crack you find on the outside of the windshield and trace it. Where the pen stops in a divot...that's where the impact occurred. Contact your car insurance company - you may have coverage there.
