my car is slow to accelerate why?

no sounds just very sluggish and doesn't always happen. noticed it 3 weeks ago and it ha s slowly gotten more often. the check engine light came on 2 days ago. also I went out this morning and the battery was dead. I will be replacing that when I get off work this afternoon. anything you can help with?
