While changing the spark plugs on a '96 kia sportage on pulling the f fourth plug there is a large amount of oil. Do I have to drain out the oil or is that not good?

You have a valve cover gasket leaking (spark plug tube seals). Oil and rubber do not go well together. If you don't change the valve cover gasket which includes the spark plug tube seals you will a have problems.
