Why does the engine not want to stay running when I press in the clutch to come to a stop. It will not idle. It also has a strong gas smell and is getting poor gas mileage.

It runs OK when driving but dies when I need to stop. It will not idle. I press down the clutch to slow to stop and the engine dies. Plus it has a strong gas smell and is getting poor gas mileage.
