Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! A growing engine noise, a hard cutoff at 60 mph, and backfiring sounds is your Soul's version of a serious cry for help. Your Soul (the car not your ethereal being) is in what's called Limp Home Mode. A misfiring cylinder or an ignition issue could all cause that backfire sound while also robbing you of power. The fact that the noise has been getting louder over time tells us whatever is wrong isn't getting better on its own. Get this scanned for codes even if no check engine light is on since there may be pending faults hiding in there.
