ECM software upgrade, last week, is it normL to feel slight hesitation or feeling of stalling. Thoughts are system relearning.

Hi, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Great question, and this is something we hear about from time to time. After an ECM software update it is not uncommon to experience some slightly different driving behavior as the engine management system adjusts to the new calibration. The ECM controls fuel trim, idle, and shift points among other things, and after a reflash the system often needs some drive time to relearn your specific driving patterns and conditions. Some mild hesitation or a slightly different throttle feel in the short term can be a normal part of that process. That said, it shouldn’t feel like it is going stall. If the hesitation or stalling feeling is significant, getting worse rather than better, or is affecting drivability in a meaningful way after a week or more of normal driving, it would be worth going back to the shop that performed the update to have them verify the software was installed correctly and that no new fault codes have been introduced. A good shop should stand behind their work and make sure everything is operating properly after any software update.
