we have a 2003 kia sorento diesel which just cut out whilst towing a caravan at 60mph. no loss of power at any time, no smoking. been working perfectly. we can prime the system and it starts, but having used all the primed fuel it cuts out again. we've had new fuel injectors fitted but there is no pressure in the system. The garage says there is no internal fuel tank pump. theyve tried a different fuel pump but it dosent help. any suggestions. theres no engine management lights and its been hooked to a computer, just said the enjectors were no good which have been changed.

I think you need to find a Kia expert or a Diesel shop to get a diagnosis. I don't have any useful information on this vehicle. If you want to find a specialist, here's our directory link for you: https://repairpal.com/kia-repair-in-gloucester-north-carolina
Don't forget also that there is a web site for Kia owners from Kia themselves that also gives you great technical resources: www.kiatechinfo.com Check it out!
ok so everythings been cleaned out, we've contacted kia, theyre no help. just say its the pump which our garage says isnt in there. theyve managed to get it started and running by pulling out a injector. dosent matter which one, it will only run on three, not properly but it stays going. when pushed back in it stops again. now theyre talking about the resistor in the ecg...any ideas?
I strongly recommend a Kia repair shop and diagnostic technician have a look at your Sorento. Obviously you are writing from another country, as the Sorento does not come in Diesel specs here in the United States. As such, I can't say that any of us are very familiar with that powertrain configuration. Thinking about basic theory and operation of Diesel engines - there are two ways of providing fuel to the injectors. You have either a high pressure oil pump driving the injectors, or a high pressure fuel pump providing direct injected fuel to piezo injectors, which provide very fine, very specific fuel pulses to the cylinders. I'm pretty sure that your modern Diesel engine would have the high pressure fuel system and direct injected fuel. A high pressure fuel Diesel powered vehicle will have a sending unit in the fuel tank, providing bulk fuel to the high pressure fuel pump. The pump converts normal line pressure to extremely high pressure fuel that is then routed to the injectors. As to why the failure occurred - I lean towards a possible electrical issue. Many times in vehicles I have seen with high pressure fuel direct injected Diesel engines, a chafed wiring harness will cause all sorts of issues with running. Something is odd in that it will indeed run after all with three injectors installed, but not the fourth. Leads me to believe that the fuel is after all getting from the tank, and the high pressure fuel pump is in turn functioning at some level. You mention the pump having been replaced - do you mean the high pressure fuel at the engine? I'm wondering if there is still air in the lines that is keeping the system from running properly at this point? Keep in mind - it's all a shot in the dark from my end. We don't even have this engine in this country and I can't really say I know it. Just from the Diesel theory and operation side. Last - did you consider an exhaust restriction? This vehicle could have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) -- although again I don't know the specific specs. They started using them in American in 2007, but they may have been a requirement elsewhere for longer. In any case, if you had a DPF plugged or a catalytic converter issue, you may have something else to go on. Good luck! And again - I strongly recommend checking the credentials of the shop you are using and possibly trying a dealership for this particular instance.
the ecu has gone off to be examined. as much as i post about it at the moment. theres no air in the fuel systemand no pump in the fuel tank. its the front pump thats been changed, as has the fuel filter twice. all wiring has been checked thoroughly. i will mention about the dpf and cat. hoping to bring some more news monday if not before. we had been driving down the road for about a hour and a half before it just cut out. fuel's just below half a tank. if it wouldnt start from cold, or had been showing other signs i could understand. ive been asking around other kia manufacturers and also other well reputable garages, all come up with the same answer of pump problems which have been ruled out. ill keep you updated as to when i know more. thanks for all your help. yes we're in gloucestershire uk. 2.3 diesel auto
