what would cause the belts to squeal and smoke when starting?

this is the first time this has happened I just purchased the car about a week ago. it has ran great until now, I went to leave work and when I started the car the belts started squealing then smoking. at that point I turned the car off. looked under the hood and did not see anything smoking. tried to start the car again and it would not start. waited a minute then tried again, it started but same thing happened. I think it might be a pulley that is stuck or maybe the ac clutch. any help or solution would be greatly appreciated.
