It sounds like and engine misfire under load to me. Possibly ignition coil, spark plug, or plug wires if equipped. An engine misfire on your 2001 Kia Rio should turn the check engine light on as set a fault code which may let you know which cylinder is misfiring. You will need a code reader or scan tool to access any stored fault codes.
