What is your question?
Hey everyone, I drive a 2016 Kia Optima EX with ~101k miles. Lately, it’s been having occasional starting issues. Today, I turned it off, then 3–4 min later tried to start it—it sputtered like it was out of gas (but I have a full tank), wouldn’t go into drive, so I shut it off and restarted it, and it started fine. This has happened multiple times. Sometimes after work or errands, it’ll crank for 6–7 seconds before finally starting, sluggish and chugging. No CEL. It was 92°F today, but it happens in all temps. AutoZone & O’Reilly both tested the battery, starter, and alternator—everything passed, no corrosion, connections looked good. Fix Finder showed no codes. I’m worried it’ll fail when I really need it. Has anyone had this issue before or know what might cause it?
What makes this problem better or worse?
When I go to start my car after work to go home and it’s 90 to 95° outside it seems to be worse but it’s intermittent. It could be a nice relatively cool morning between 50 to 60° and it still does it.
How long has your 2016 Kia Optima had this problem?
A few months or more

Hi - I am Dave, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. First: Autozone and O'Reilly and their "tests" don't do much to help, honestly. Second - you can have problems without diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) being set.. If I had to guess (which is all I can do from my computer keyboard!) I would suggest a fuel delivery issue or fuel quality issue. This kind of thing happens at high ambient temperatures due to vapor lock or fuel delivery issues. This kind of concern never sets DTC's also. But it's totally a guess - really what should happen is diagnostic testing at the time the problem is happening. This can tell if there's a spark, fuel or air issue. Then, a technician can test further into the areas of concern.
