It just happened one day just like any other day started car went to shift to reverse and it wouldn't so now everytime I have to stick something in the emergency release to shift why?

Hello, Either your ignition switch, brake light switch, or the shift-interlock solenoid has failed. The three work together to ensure the transmission cannot be moved unless the key is on and the brake is pressed. Finding which one is out can be a challenge, but start by checking the brake lights are working, and move to testing for power at the solenoid with the key on and brakes pressed.
