What is your question?
After replacing the TPMS units in the tires, the letters "TPMS" intermittently display on the dash. The shop did a "hard reset" and after driving for about 10 miles the TPMS text on the dash went away. However, after driving another 10 miles the "TPMS" displayed on the dash again. I went back to the tire shop and the technician said to give it a couple more days to "fully reset" (?); personally, I've never heard of it working that way. So here's my question, does the 2020 Kia Optima LX require a relearn/pairing GDS process via the OBDII port?
What makes this problem better or worse?
hard reset initially made the TPMS letters go away but returned shortly after
How long has your 2010 Kia Optima had this problem?
More than a month

Hi, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! On your 2020 Kia Optima LX, the TPMS sensors do require a proper relearn procedure after being replaced, and simply doing a hard reset and driving is not always sufficient. Kia's TPMS system on this generation vehicle does typically require a relearn process using a TPMS activation tool or in some cases a GDS scan tool through the OBDII port to properly pair the new sensor IDs to the vehicle's TPMS control module. The "give it a few days" explanation from the technician is not really how this system works, and if the sensors aren't properly paired the warning light will continue to appear. I’d recommend going back to the shop and specifically asking whether they used a TPMS relearn tool to register the new sensor IDs to the vehicle's computer, as this is a critical step that should have been part of the original service. If they aren't equipped to perform this procedure a tire shop or dealer with the proper TPMS programming tools should be able to resolve this fairly quickly.
