the shifter moves freely up and down, but does not shift into gear

Had the same problem twice and a cable had snapped underneath that needed replaced. Dealership charged me $400 for repair first time. Someone who knows what they are doing needs to shift u into drive, or 1st or 2nd gear manually so you can get it to a shop or mechanic friend but once u put her in park she will need to sit until issue is resolved. I understand a common problem so note your fix in your maint. manual for next time.
automatic transmission ?? sounds like the shifter cable came free this happened to me twice 1st time i took took it to the dealership they charged $300 dollars and replaced the cable less than a year later it happend again found a cheap (about 5 dollars) easy (about 1hr) and permant solution at a jeep form. the problem is that the cable is just press on and the pin that holds it has a teflon sleve and the cable is also teflon. Due to the heat the teflon on both becomes brittle and will just drop off ...poor engineering(no retaining pin) on the jeep form 1 guy mention a solution that sounded good so i tried it and it works great. removing the part that the pin is on drill out the pin and replace it with a 1/4 in stainless steel bolt a couple of washers and a locknut the bolt was 1-1/4 in long i believe. hopefully this solves your problem if you need more details just let me know
