Key won't advance from the 'ON' position to the 'START" position

I stopped for gas in my 2004 wrangler. No issues other than a check engine light was on for a "misfire on cylinder 1".
I fueled up, got in and turned the key and advanced it to the ON position and it STOPPED as it was going to the start position.
I pulled the key cylinder and tried to start it with a screw driver, Same issue.
Next I put the key in the ON position and jumped the starter. The starter cranked the motor but it would not fire.
Towed it home.
Anyone have any ideas or come across the same issue?
