Windshield design or inferior glass?

What is your question?

I bought my 97 Wrangler in 2002. The dealer installed a new windshield at that time. Since then, I've replaced it two more times, and I now have a (spreading) chip in the current one that will require another replacement. Is this a "normal" occurence because of the flat design, or am I getting inferior replacements?
