removing shifter

I am removing the trans to install a clutch. In the manual I have it says to twist the retaninig ring off. It does not have one. I took the boot off around the shifters and can't see how it comes off other than unbolting the whole shifter housing from the trans.

is there a 4 bolt flange on the top of the trans?? Roy

Yes, there is a 4 bolt flange or cover that the shifter goes in.
