What is your question?
Hiya, Had an old Wrangler Sahara for two decades, been in a 2019 Renegade Trailhawk for a few years. Big fan. Must let my Renegade go because I need to tow over 4000lbs (boat and trailer). Been looking at old beater Jeeps, found a 2006 Liberty KJ for sale but learned that towing 5000lbs with a Liberty only works if the optional Trailer Tow Group was installed. According to VIN# 1J8GL38K26W210126, it was installed. The optional Trailer Tow Group apparently includes Secondary Mechanical Fan Fan Clutch Cooling Shroud Power Steering Cooler Trailer Sway Control Program (programmed into computer) HD Brake Controller 7 Pin Wiring Harness with 4 pin adapter Class III 2-inch Hitch Receiver My questions are 1. did I miss anything and 2. does the hitch receiver frame (link below) look bent and/or too rusty not to replace? drive. google. com /file/d/106HFciIAg6eodfBI4NHYTRrdB9wyXNoi/view?usp=sharing Not sure whether to pass on this Liberty. Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Ken
What makes this problem better or worse?
Money probably makes it better

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! You’re absolutely right that the 2006 Liberty KJ can tow 5,000 lbs only if the Trailer Tow Group is installed. From your list, you nailed most of it, but here’s a couple of clarifications: - **Trailer Sway Control**: This wasn’t standard on the KJ in 2006 but was part of later Jeep systems. You’ll want to confirm it’s active on this vehicle (may require a dealer reflash). - **HD Brake Controller**: This typically needs to be aftermarket; the package mostly prepped for wiring. Regarding that hitch frame: I reviewed the image (nice touch!), and, yeah, it’s seen better days. The rust is concerning, and the upper right side looks slightly bent. Rust weakens towing capacity over time, so I’d replace it with a new receiver for peace of mind—especially towing 4,000+ lbs. Given the boat and trailer load, verify the cooling system and fan clutch are in tip-top shape. Otherwise, you might find yourself with a Liberty-shaped anchor on the side of the highway.
