Power Steering Pressure hose vs Power Steering Pump

I was told that my power steering hose has a leak and it does,I can see where it is leaking at the connection leading into the pump. The mechanic told me I needed to change the pump and hose for over $500.00 dollars. Why not change the hose first? How can you tell if the pump is bad? MAC
