Hi, I’m 17 and looking to buy my second vehicle. I’m deciding between two used vehicles and would really appreciate an honest opinion from a mechanic. Option 1: 2007 Ford Mustang V6 Premium — about 90,000–95,000 miles — asking $7,500 OBO. Option 2: 2021 Jeep Compass Latitude — about 161,000 miles — asking $8,000. The insurance quotes from State Farmare almost identical for me, around $104–$105/month for full coverage. I’m planning to negotiate the price on either one. Which one would you consider the better purchase for reliability, expected repair costs, and overall value? Are there any major problems or expensive repairs I should be especially concerned about with either vehicle? Also, what should I have checked during a pre-purchase inspection before I buy either one? I’m mainly looking for the vehicle that is least likely to turn into an expensive headache. Thank you!

Hi - Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. Sadly it's merely opinion which is not necessarily rooted in fact - for me to weigh in. There is no readily available data to suggest any correlation or comparison to the two vehicle's you've shared. I can go with gut and say the Mustang will yield more reasonable reliabilty, but I cannot really say for sure.
