2018 jeep Cherokee shifter lights come on

2018 Cherokee high altitude when I shift from drive mode to manual mode shifting 1 thru 9 gears some of the time all the lights on the shifter Colum come on and stay on. it reverts to drive mode only. If I stop the car shift to park turn the car off and restart the car it works normal tell the next time. If I leave it in drive only, I have no trouble. can you tell me what is the problem?

What makes this problem better or worse?
