what's the difference between 1, 2, 3, or 4, prong spark plugs

Use which ever spark plug is designed for your engine. Some Toyota engines must use twin electrode spark plus. But the idea of the "prongs" is spark will jump to the easiest location, the more paths you have for the spark to jump the more likely you are to reduce misfires in theory in practice despite the hype, most mechanics feel the four electrode plugs foul easier and are not worth using.
