and the the light on the dash say gearbox fault and car start off in low gear

If the engine control module sense that there is a problem with the throttle body it put the transmission in limp mode, most of the time it put the transmission in second gear and let you drive the car in low speed. Turnig the ignition off and then back on some time will reset the engine control module.
