With the car on a lift do I have to compress the front springs to change shocks What is your question?
I am also replacing all ball joints. Will the front springs also need to be compressed to accomplish this.

yes they do if they are struts. do not take them apart without a compressor. those things will go through a cement wall with that kind of pressure
