A guess from my computer screen would be that you have a probable concern with the transfer case that may not be allowing proper shifting into the correct desired gear. Terrible grinding sounds are never good and likely evidence of mechanical concerns with the transfer case itself. Testing is required to see what is happening. Good luck.
